Imagine that a reader of your site will take one action only when they visit your site. Forget about their desires…what do you want that action to be?

- Subscribe to your feed?
- Read the latest post?
- Browse your archives?
- Join an affiliate program?
- Leave a comment?
The truth of the matter is that most of your readers are lazy won’t take any action at all when they visit your site. This means that you
have to design and focus your site to maximize the conversion rates for
all of your traffic. You need to ensure that your site is razor sharp
to make them take the action that you want.
How you want your readers to act should influence every aspect of your site’s design and how every single pixel is utilized on your site.
How you can control your readers

Once you’ve decided what you want your readers to do, there are many steps that you can take in order to increase your influence over them:
You want to your readers to click on your AdSense
- Blend and position your ads in prominent positions such as the header and in posts.
- Remove other forms of affiliate advertising.
- Cut down on the amount of external links from your site so there is
a greater chance of a visitor leaving through an AdSense link.
You want to make your readers subscribe to your feed
- Offer many forms of subscription such as in a reader or via email.
- Employ a large RSS button on your site that is easy to find.
- Explain the benefits of subscribing in a post.
You want to make your readers read your latest post
You want your readers to browse your Archives
- Set your Archives page as the front page for your site.
- Use a Top Posts plugin and place the list in a prominent position.
- Publish a monthly recap of your best posts from the previous month.

You want your readers to join an affiliate program
- Write a post that explains the benefits of the program and your experiences with it. Real life examples sell products!
- Remove banners that link to other affiliate programs (especially competing programs!).
- Remove AdSense as this often displays links to competing programs.
You want your readers to leave a comment
- Write on a controversial topic that people have a strong opinion about.
- Ask a question at the end of your post that relates to an undiscussed area of the topic and is more than just “What do you think?“.
- Run the Top Commentators plugin and give a prize to the top commentator for the month.
Getting your readers to do what you want them to do is often as easy as taking away all other options!
Be the proactive puppetmaster
Many sites go for an “I want everything” design and are plastered with ads that nobody will ever click. By drawing attention towards what you want your readers to do, you are taking a proactive position with your income that will make you more money than those who just sit and wait for the clicks to happen! Remember, it’s your income and you are in control!
