Whenever a blogger writes an article that creates controversy.....

Whenever a blogger writes an article that creates controversy, pushes the limits or is pure evil there is one set of phrases that are designed to “seek revenge” and let the world know that not everybody is happy about it:

Oh the horror!

Here’s why it won’t affect your earnings

If you write a post and nobody unsubscribes that means that you’re pleasing everybody. If you’re pleasing everybody that means you’re writing incredibly neutral and unbiased posts that nobody is going to feel compelled to write about, link to or discuss.

You’re invisible. And invisible bloggers don’t make money!

There’s one exception to this and that’s to write the complete, ultimate and definitive guide on a topic that covers every single aspect of the topic in an unbiased and academic manner that won’t annoy anybody and will be linked to as a great resource….but then some people may unsubscribe because the post is boring and too long!

Unsubscribing can be to your benefit

It is impossible to please everybody and you shouldn’t be concerned if you read that someone has just unsubscribed from your site. If they actually write about doing so in the comments or in a post on another site - it’s a bonus! You’re getting free publicity for your site and the fact they’ve cared enough to actually write about unsubscribing means that they’ll probably be back anyway just to see what else might annoy them!

Bethany unsubscribed - but she still reads it! Nobody ever completely leaves. They may not come back as often, but you’ll rarely lose a reader forever.

Being told that someone has just unsubscribed is never a bad thing for your site. The trick is simply to have new subscribers outnumber those that leave.

Just remember that when Elvis first shook his hips, he created a mountain of controversy and earned the nickname “Elvis the Pelvis” - and millions of people tuned in to watch it!
