There is some talk that  a lot of professional people feel threatened by blogging, because they feel they are giving away their hard earned knowledge for free. There is some truth in this argument. However given the open style of blogging and that there are no hard and fast rules as to how one should blog the choice is very much yours as to how you do it. The only rule that counts if one is going to blog, it has to be interesting. Here is non conclusive number of styles one can use:

1.            Blog about changes industry practise- Demonstrates that the company is watching current trends

2.            Blog about personal development - shows that you are keeping up to date in your field

3.            Blog about your experiences - Shows that you know what you are talking about

4.            Blog about News events – Gives an insight into your personal opinions and thoughts

For professionals  that do decide to take the plunge the marketing gains are significant not just in search engine results and online media, but in providing your own marketing information. Which this can be reused and edited at a later stage for different campaigns. With big companies like Sony encouraging their executives to do it, how long can you wait?

With rumours flying around that Google has purchased Beboo and coupled with the fact the it has just signed a new deal with Nokia It would appear that it is time for Google to consider buying a social network platform. It lost out last month to Microsoft to get piece of Face book. Who would be the obvious choice. Given that Google is a market leader it would be looking for someone to match its market position. With Face book gone there are quite a few companies left to choose form. Here is my selection with comments

8. MarkTD : This is marketing networking and considering Google is one of the largest marketers on the internet this is an unlikely choice.

7. Newsvine : This network concentrates on news stories, it was launched in March 2006 read, write, and interact with the news. I have put this at number 8 as Google would be unlikely to be interested in Newsvine as it already has its own partners in providing News to it users accounts.

6. Plime : The social network that is groomed by users, it is an interesting concept but they have a lot work to do yet to refine the site and make it more workable.

5. del.icio.us: This enormously popular social bookmarking was the first before a whole line imitators. Graphics wise it would work well with Google unfortunately Google does offer its own bookmarking service for RSS feeds so it is an unlikely match here.

4. Reddit : As it explains in its own words is a source for what is new a popular on the internet. It is slightly more graphical then del.icio.us Probably too small for Google.

3. Shoutwire : Is quite similar to digg but not as popular. Yet again it is a question of seize….

2. Proppler : I Like this site, I like the way the software works. It has a lot users. Unfortunately they are owned by Aol who again were bought up by Time Warner so unlikely that they would sell to Google.

1. Digg: Is my choice. It is pretty much accepted as the site with highest amount of traffic and users, so it would be very interesting for Google. They could easily add it into their array of products where it would combine well with Youtube, Gmail, etc

Of course I have a personal favourite for them here but I am biased Wxc

Tubes–Interesting New Filesharing Program

Tubes instantly builds synchronized, secure connections (what we call a “tube”) between your desktop and the desktop of your friends, family, co-workers - even your other computers. Now anything you drop in a tube is whisked to the desktop of anyone you choose - and vice versa.

The Lost Dr. Seuss Poem - I Love My Job

This is a funny poem that should ring a bell with all of the white collar workers out there–the Office Space crowd. It mocks all the things that make us pull our hair out.

Ustream.tv is a live video community for everyone. Anyone with a computer, an Internet connection and a web cam can set up their own channel and broadcast live (similar to Justin.tv). The site launched in March 2007, much earlier than expected to try to capitalize on all of the press surrounding Justin.tv.

The site has attracted tech celebs Robert Scoble and Chris Pirillo. ( As Fetured here on Wcx)

Ustream can be used by many different kinds of people for many different purposes. “Already we have seen bloggers, podcasters, radio stations, DJ’s, citizen journalist, talk show hosts, celebrities, rock bands, entertainers, comedians, churches, political candidates, government officials, conferences, event sponsors, record labels, television networks, colleges, university organizations, fraternities, sororities, charities, community groups, websites, civic groups, priests, monks, bird lovers, ghost hunters, dog watchers, weddings, lifecasters, professionals and amateurs.”

Other live broadcasting sites include Stickam, Mogulus and BlogTv

With Ustream.tv anyone with a computer, an Internet connection and a web cam can set up their own channel and broadcast live. While there are other sites that let you broadcast live video, Ustream is really targeting users who want to broadcast 24/7. The site lets users put up a calendar with upcoming activities so viewers know the best time to tune in. In addition, the interface integrates chat so users can type to each other while watching.

Live video can be watched on the site, or embedded onto any other website. Ustream’s flash video player constantly shows how many other viewers are watching the live video feed along with you.

Ustream.tv also has a section for recorded videos, but for some reason a recorded version of a guy sleeping just isn’t as interesting as watching it live.
